The journey begins with a comprehensive orientation where interns and volunteers are introduced to Owli Africa’s mission, values, and key focus areas: education, child protection, digital literacy, economic empowerment, and inclusive development. You’ll gain a broad understanding of Kenya’s social and development landscape—exploring themes such as gender equality, youth resilience, disability inclusion, and grassroots entrepreneurship. Participants also receive training in ethical engagement, field safety, and culturally sensitive communication to prepare them for immersive work within diverse communities. Each participant is matched to a focus area aligned with their academic background, career interests, or personal passion. This first phase sets the tone for your journey—anchoring your learning in purpose and community relevance.

In the next phases, your learning moves from the classroom into the field. You’ll spend time rotating through Owli’s vibrant community hubs, engaging directly in grassroots projects that support women-led enterprises, child-focused initiatives, and youth empowerment programs. This phase includes home visits, storytelling sessions, and active involvement in training or mentorship programs, allowing you to gain deep cultural insight and human connection. Building on your field experience, you’ll then participate in a series of practical skills development workshops—ranging from digital literacy, data collection and analysis, and social innovation to project planning, proposal writing, and advocacy communication. These sessions are facilitated by experienced mentors and development practitioners. Using the insights and data gathered from the field, you will co-create a community project or intervention, working closely with Owli’s team and local stakeholders.

As part of your internship or volunteer journey with Owli Africa, you’ll engage in targeted skills-building workshops led by experienced mentors and practitioners. These sessions cover key areas such as digital literacy, social innovation, data collection, project planning, proposal writing, and community advocacy. Using insights gained during field immersion, you will co-design and implement a community-based project that addresses a real challenge—ranging from launching a youth tech initiative or developing a women’s training toolkit to running an awareness campaign. Throughout this phase, you’ll receive continuous guidance and feedback from Owli’s team, ensuring your contribution is both impactful and sustainable. This hands-on experience strengthens your problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills—preparing you for future roles in development, entrepreneurship, or social impact work.

In the final phase of your internship or volunteer experience, you will bring your project to life. With support from Owli Africa’s team and community partners, you’ll implement your solution in a real-world setting—testing its impact and refining it based on feedback. Once your project is delivered, you’ll participate in guided reflection sessions to evaluate your learning, challenges, and personal growth. This phase provides space to celebrate your contributions, share insights with peers, and capture lessons that can inform future development work.
