About Drivenet

DRIVE (Digital Reading for Inclusivity, Versatility and Engagement) was a collaborative research initiative funded by UK Research and Innovation’s Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) under the Digital Innovation for Development in Africa (DIDA) strand. The project ran from May 1, 2020, to April 30, 2021, and was one of 24 pioneering networks exploring how digital technologies can address key development challenges across Africa.

Implemented through Drivenet Kenya in collaboration with the University of Bournemouth (UK) and local Kenyan partners, the DRIVE project aimed to improve digital reading accessibility and promote inclusive learning for marginalized communities, particularly youth and children in low-resource settings.

Owli Africa played a key role in mobilizing community stakeholders, collecting field data, and co-creating local engagement strategies to test and scale digital learning tools that are both culturally relevant and technologically adaptable.

The networks brought together academics, industry, NGOs, policymakers and practitioners from Africa with UK partners to maximise digital technologies to address development challenges including health, energy and accessibility to online resources.

 

Our tasks and responsibilities

As a local implementation partner, Owli Africa played a vital role in the success of the Drivenet Kenya (DRIVE) project, a digital learning research initiative funded by UKRI’s Global Challenges Research Fund.Capacity Building & Training: We provided basic digital literacy training for youth participants, educators, and caregivers to enhance the impact and sustainability of the digital reading interventions. Knowledge Sharing & Dissemination: Owli Africa helped document field experiences and contributed to learning sessions and knowledge exchange forums with international and local partners.

 

Community Mobilization & Stakeholder Engagement

Owli Africa coordinated with schools, youth groups, and local leaders to ensure inclusive participation from marginalized and underserved communities in Nairobi and beyond.

Field Research & Data Collection

We supported the design and implementation of community-level surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions that informed the development of digital reading tools tailored to local needs and contexts.Piloting Digital Literacy Tools: Owli facilitated the piloting and testing of digital reading platforms in youth centers and learning hubs, offering on-ground feedback to researchers and developers
